1 Home Network Setup, Sharing, Streaming, and Backup Series

If you have more than one computer in your home, you’ve probably considered setting up a home network. If you’ve set up a home network and it doesn’t work the way you’d like it to, you’ve probably considered throwing your equipment out of the window. Please, close the window and read on. This week, I’ll walk you through what hardware you need to set up a home network, where to buy it, and how it works together. I’ll then show you how to share files on your network, how to stream media across your network (and out to the world—even your phone), and how to back up your data, automatically, to any PC in your home.

Note: these guides are written for all recent (XP, Vista, 7) versions of Windows unless otherwise noted. If you find any incompatibilities, please let me know.

Automatically Download TV Shows to Your PC [How To]

Posted by Rich On February - 11 - 20107 COMMENTS

rssicon 220x220 Automatically Download TV Shows to Your PC [How To]If you would like µTorrent to automatically download torrents (i.e. a TV Series), follow this guide.

I pay for a cable subscription that I rarely get to use and I often miss my favorite shows like The Office and How I Met Your Mother. I can stream these shows, from the official sites, in most cases; however my internet connection isn’t always great and, at peak hours, the connection is too slow to stream well enough to view. In this guide, you’ll learn how to set up µTorrent and have it download your favorite TV shows.

PROS:

This download is freeware, all features of this program are available for all to use freely. Very light on resources.  Good & bad torrents easily distinguishable.  Automatically move downloaded torrents to a specified output directory (good for bittorrent clients that monitor a specific folder, like uTorrent).

CONS:

No customisable options.  No help documentation. Dull GUI.  No system tray context menu.

VERDICT:

An excellent tool to save you trawling through different torrent websites to find the right torrent, this application uses btjunkie.org as its search engine and indexer.  Torrents are easily distinguishable by green/red coloured search results based on positive/negative votes and available seeders.  TorrentFetcher is no burden on the system, 5MB RAM and minimal CPU usage is all that is needed.   The ability to save torrents to a specified output directory or automatically open with your bittorrent client makes this a very tidy application.  Highly recommended and extremely easy to use.

PRICE:

Free.

Get Back Lost Off-Screen Windows [How To]

Posted by Thomas On February - 7 - 20106 COMMENTS

Toolbox icon 220x220 Get Back Lost Off Screen Windows [How To]This solution I owe to my brother – who made me figure this one out for him. My brother is one of you Laptop users that, when home (or the office), hooks up his computer to an external monitor, extending his desktop. This works fine – unless you forget to move every application window back to your main desktop before disconnecting the extra monitor. Then what do you do ?

If you’re still at home (or the office) then it’s no “biggy”, but if you’re on the road somewhere, suddenly realize that your PowerPoint presentation is showing on the “other” monitor… What then ?

Don’t worry – Read on
