A not very weel known feature in IE8 is it's ability to block ads.

By enabling the InPrivate Filtering option in the safety tab (or Ctrl+Shift+F) you can now start to block ads.

You can set the threshold for the amount of times offending content is displayed accross your browsing session before IE decides to block it, and choose whether to automatically block, manually block or allow it.
Over time IE will build the list and will become more and more effective. It won't start to block all content immediately.
However, i came across these xml files based on AdBlocks prefrences that will cut 90% of ads straight up :)
To install them, download the files and extract to desktop, go to the advanced options in IE and import the xml files

If you want to start IE8 in InPrivate Filtering mode everytime you must modify the registry.

Type regedit in the start menu and navigate to;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Safety\PrivacIE

In the right hand pane create a new DWORD value called StartMode with a hexidecimal value of 1 (this starts IE in IPF mode everytime)

rsvr85 - So you are saying that if a new DWORD is created [as shown] then IPF will be enabled everytime IE is started [without having to check/tick IPF box] ..... ?? :)

Hey randomchaos, long time no see ;)

You've got it, creating the new value in regedit will start IE in IPF mode every time. The tick next to it should show to confirm.

rsvr85 - Ok I'll give that a try! -The only reason I haven't bothered with IPF so far in IE8 is that I had to "turn it on" in either the command bar or the status bar every darned time!
......... Also I don't like the look of that "google analytics" spyin' on me everywhere I go!!

Ctrl + Shirf + F is short enough to justify it though. The registry mod is definitely worth it ;)

And yeah, i was suprised how much google kept cropping up too, sneeky ba****ds!!

rsvr85 - I've edited the reg and added that StartMode key. [I've done this on my XP-Pro pc first to see how it goes before altering anything on my Vista laptop! I use my XP-Pro pc as a "guinea pig" for trying out stuff, new programs, system utilities, etc.] ....... and yeah, I closed down IE then re-opened it and Hey Presto, IPF enabled!! :D
Dunno if it's my imagination or not [placebo effect!] but my browser seems a little faster now too after the reg. mod ...... !?! :o

rsvr85 - Well, IE has it's critics [en masse!!] but IE8 seems to be a safe-ish browser, although it doesn't have the bells and whistles of Firefox! ...... But I kinda like it and it runs well [and fast!] on my XP and Vista PCs. :)

@ randomchaos
Yeah i knew about that one, that starts IE in the InPrivate Browsing Mode, (Ctrl + Shift + P) which i don't want each time i start. The reg mod suits my needs much better, and i assume the needs of the other readers here too ;)
