Remove Microsoft Groove Folder Synchronization

Office 2007 comes with a utility named Groove and I assume you already know that because you’re reading this guide. Learn how to remove it below.

I have no need for Groove, which syncs your documents for collaboration with others. If you have no need for this, you can do either of the following: remove Groove completely or remove references to the groove in Windows Explorer.

Note: This procedure is outlined in Vista but works in XP too.

Completely Remove Groove from Your System

To remove groove from your system, do the following:

  1. Press the Start button, type Control, and click on Control Panel
  2. Click on Uninstall a program
Remove Microsoft Groove Folder Synchronization 1
  3. Select Microsoft Office and click Change Remove Microsoft Groove Folder Synchronization 2
  4. Ensure Add or Remove Features is selected and press Continue Remove Microsoft Groove Folder Synchronization 3
  5. Click Microsoft Office Groove and select Not Available Remove Microsoft Groove Folder Synchronization
  6. Click Continue and wait for Groove to uninstall

Remove Reference to Groove in Windows Explorer

If you would like to keep Office Groove, but remove references in Windows Explorer, do the following:

Locate the following Registry keys and delete them to remove the Groove Folder Synchronization entries:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\XXX Groove GFS Context Menu Handler XXX
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\XXX Groove GFS Context Menu Handler XXX
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\XXX Groove GFS Context Menu Handler XXX
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\XXX Groove GFS Context Menu Handler XXX
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\XXX Groove GFS Context Menu Handler XXX

This will remove the entries from the context menu but will not uninstall Microsoft Office Groove.

Only one question: why install it in first place? It’s “deselectable” during the installation.

hi Rich..

thank you for this good piece of information..

i had one major problem in office 2007 sometimes back.. but now since i have restored my laptop its going good.. if you could tell something about that also, it would be very nice.

the problem was that, i was having microsoft office professional 2007 with my laptop, and it was running fine; but as soon as i installed MS project 2000, then it could not run. so i unistalled it, but my office got corrupted. whenever i tried to open excel or powerpoint or word, it started configuring for 10-15 mins, and thereafter failed..

i searched for this problem on google, but found some solution which corrupted my registry.. finally i had no choice but to restore my laptop..

if you could help something on this.. that would be so nice of you..

..
lastly, one thing more.. i am a member of mywindowspc.com but for the past weeks, i am not able to connect this site thru my wifi.. i am able to open google and many sites, but not this one..

i could not guess what is happening.

thanks..

In the future, I would uninstall Office 2007 and then reinstall it. Any number of reasons could attribute the corruption of the files and sometimes it’s easier to start from the beginning (without restoring/reformatting your laptop.)

I wonder why this is not working. Could you try someone else’s computer (not your wi-fi) on the site? Could you also try another computer on your wifi connection to see if it works on there?

Hi Rich

Thanks for the reply. I will try to connect on a different computer.

Let’s see.
