Rate and Improve Your Computer's Performance

Like Windows Vista, Windows Seven comes with a performance rating tool, which rates your system and then gives you tips on improving it. In this guide, you’ll learn how to use Windows 7’s Performance Information Tools to rate your system.

Note: These guides are written for the public beta of Windows Seven Ultimate (build 7000.) As further builds are released, these guides may be subject to change and will be updated accordingly. If the methods described below do not work, please don’t hesitate to ask our experts in the forums.

My HDD appears as 2.9 under Windows 7.
If I disable under the device manager writing cache and advance performance mode, then I get 5.3 like under Vista.
Either the HDD option was put on reverse, or there is a bug in Windows 7. I am still investigating in to this, also seeing if my HDD is faster with writing cache off (I know in Vista and XP it was not the case)

when i try it my computer freezes! I have to shut down. My computer is running fine though with windows 7 I just cant rate it!

  6. Rich says:

There is a chance of your computer freezing. The test may take up to ten minutes, so don’t worry if it freezes for five or more (Note: This shouldn’t happen, but it is possible.)

  7. Good_Bytes says:

It could be a driver related issue. Remember that Windows 7 drivers for your device could be not liking it because they are Vista drivers or that the drive is in alpha/beta stage.

In any case, it is critical to submit a feedback to Microsoft. Someone else is for sure to have the same problem. Having a few of similar issue will make Microsoft make the fix a priority and get it get fixed sometime before the final version. I am sure you don’t want your system to not be Windows 7 ready.

  9. Nathan says:

same problem here as well. Laptop freezes on the media decoding performance….leaving Microsoft some feedback

ditto for me… stock dell dimension 2400… I couldn’t even find a Vista display driver so I installed the latest XP driver from the intel site for my onboard video

  11. Gabriel says:

hi i am running windows seven ultimate build 6801 on dell inspiron 1501 1.80GHz 80GB HDD and 512 MB ram 256MB video card
when i try to rate it it says”cannot complete assessment
the assessment or other operation didnot complete successfully this is due to an error being reported from the operating system , driver or other component”
this is the second time time i install windows 7
the first time it was rating at 2.0 then i installed xp
and now back to seven but it is not rating note that windows 7 is not installed from microsoft website but from a dvd

  12. Rich says:

Gabriel, it seems a few people are having issues with the rating system. I recommend reporting the issue, much like you did here, to Microsoft through the “Send feedback” link.
