Solving computer problems on your own means less downtime, less hassle and no or low cost. However, it is important that you know what problems you can handle on your own and which issues are best left to professionals.  For example, it is advised that most hardware-related problems are best left to computer experts. Similarly, it is advisable that you try and analyze most software-related issues yourself, as quite often, they can be easily resolved.

One of the most common occurrences of software errors are related to EXE or executable files. These files are used by programs to run codes on your computer to perform various tasks. From the installation of new software to using the various features of the software, several EXE files need to be executed.

The most common cause of EXE errors are malware infections. Malware programs use the capability of EXE files to run codes, and to install and run malicious programs on your PC. To prevent these programs from carrying out their malicious intentions, it is recommended that you use reliable antivirus and antispyware tools to regularly scan and clean your PC. You must keep these tools updated with the latest definitions to ensure that your system is well-equipped to fight the latest threats. The use of a firewall is also recommended to block external intrusions to your PC. The Windows Firewall is usually sufficient for home PC users. Some people also opt for a third-party firewall, such as ZoneAlarm (vsmon.exe) if the need arises.

Many software programs and drivers save temporary files on your PC to perform various tasks. If these temporary files are not removed after the program has finished its tasks, errors may occur. For example, the spoolsv.exe error may occur if the temporary spool files are not removed from the spool folder after the print job is complete. A filled up Temp folder may also generate this error. The best way to empty the Temp folder is by using the Disk Cleanup tool. To clean up temporary printer spool files, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers folder and then delete all files located within it. After you have removed unwanted files, you may use the Disk Defragmenter tool to make your hard disk contiguous. Defragging helps in speeding up the hard disk and thus, enables you to optimize your PC for much better performance.

Another essential task to keep your system free from errors is to ensure that all software installed on your PC stays up-to-date with the latest service packs, security releases and patches. To keep your Windows operating system and other Microsoft products updated, you just need to ensure that the Automatic Update option available in the Control Panel is enabled. You may also opt for a good driver scanner tool to ensure that your device drivers stay updated at all times.

Lastly, it is essential that you scan and clean your registry on a regular basis to keep it free from problems. A recommended method is to use a reliable and user-friendly registry cleaner tool to do the job.
