Tweak Vista SP1 to Gain Control Over the Windows Server 2008 Hypervisor

News Add comments

An update made available for both the x86 and x64 editions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 enables administrators to remotely manage the Windows Server 2008 hypervisor. The update is essentially designed to introduce the Vista SP1 tailored management tools for the Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Release Candidate. Via the Hyper-V remote management tools, administrators will be able to handle hypervisor-based virtualization software in Windows Server 2008 from a machine running Windows Vista SP1. The tool is set up as a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in enabling access to the Redmond company’s latest server operating system using the Hyper-V role.

“The Hyper-V management tools (MMC snap-in and associated UI) are now available for download. These tools allow you to manage and interact with an installation of Hyper-V from your Vista computer in exactly the same manner that you do on a full installation of Windows Server 2008. Note that you need to have SP1 installed on Vista in order for this to work. Also be aware that installing the Hyper-V management tools will create a shortcut for our MMC snap-in the ‘Administrative Tools’ folder - which is not displayed under Vista by default. You need to enable this folder under the start menu properties to have it displayed,” revealed Ben Armstrong, Program manager on the core virtualization team at Microsoft.

The release of the Hyper-V Manager MMC comes on the heels of the Release Candidate for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The Hyper-V Manager MMC is designed specifically for Windows Vista SP1 and will be available in the Administrative Tools.

“I’m sure you’re familiar with the Microsoft Management Console, with the latest version being version 3.0. The Microsoft Management Console and it’s relevant snap-ins are useful for managing different elements of your local, or remote systems. In this case, the specific snap-in that you can install and enable is to remotely manage Hyper-V boxes. Take note - it needs Vista SP1 - regular Vista just won’t cut it. You can, however, choose between x86 and x64 versions of Vista SP1,” stated Matt McSpirit, Microsoft UK Partner Technology Specialist.
