Anti-Virus Alternatives: Speed up Your New PC

News, Windows Guides Announcements Add comments

If you purchased a new PC within the last three months or so, you may notice it’s not as fast as you want it to be. I know a lot of people that feel this way about their shiny new computer. In this guide, you’ll learn how to remove the bundled anti-virus program, replace it with another program that is much more lightweight, and regain your computer’s speed again!

If you bought a computer from one of the common manufacturers, it probably came with Norton or McAffee. If you’re computer came with either, I’m sure you’ll know which one by now because it’s probably been bugging you ever since you pressed the power button for the first time!

Learn how to remove both, the easy way, below.

Removing the Bundled Anti-virus Program

If you don’t have either Norton or McAfee, email me and I’ll help you out.

Removing Norton Anti-virus

To remove Norton, first save your product key (if you have one) and then use Norton’s official tool.

Removing McAfee

First, try removing McAfee through Add/Remove programs. If this does not work, use McAffee’s official removal tool.

Installing a New Anti-virus Program

I would like to share three programs that I feel are the best. Each program has a paid version, but all are free to try for at least 30 days.

Good: AVG Anti-Virus

I used AVG for years and I am very satisfied with how it works. AVG Free is lightweight and updates daily to protect you from the latest threats.

Better: Avast!

Avast is another light-weight anti-virus program that ensures your security and protection online. Avast is highly rated by many people and I too highly recommend this software.

Best: ESET NOD32 Antivirus

By far the best anti-virus program is ESET NOD32 Antivirus, which I currently use on all of my PCs. Being the best, ESET NOD32 comes with a price tag of $39.99 a year. I believe this cost is worth it and you wont be disappointed by how well this program works. Say goodbye to bloated anti-virus programs and hello to NOD32.

Save 25% on ESET NOD32 Antivirus System. Download Now!

You’re Done!

Now you’ve removed your slow program and installed a light-weight replacement, your computer is both protected and speedy again!

I would put AntiVir as better, and downgrade Avast as good. AntiVir has very high detection rates according to reliable AV testers while Avast is decent. Avast, though, does not have scheduled scanning, which can be a deal breaker (it is for me). AVG is the most well-known free AV but it’s not very reliable. Its virus detection rating is only so-so, and there are fewer options given to the user once it does detect malware (clean and/or remove). NOD32 probably deserves the best ranking based on AV tests and user reviews, but it doesn’t work well with any system I had, XP or Vista. I’ll just take your word for it, but I’ll still use AntiVir.

My new PC laptop came with McAfee Security Suite. Is it really that bad? While i’m quite sure Norton Products can really turn a new Core-Duo Pc in a 1990’s 80386, I’ve not the same impression with McAfee…

And you forgot to mention Antivir, which is by far the best free solution, imho. :)

I am using free virus software AVAST and AVG for some time without any problems.
