Microsoft made a major update to Live Maps this week that introduces a number of new features and improvements to the online mapping service. Users of the service can now export their maps in various GPS formats, see improved 3D renderings, and subscribe to RSS feeds for a certain region, among a plethora of other things. The improvements make it a stronger competitor to other popular mapping services (namely Google Maps), although Live Maps could still benefit from more mindshare from the general Internet-using public.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and India’s HCL Infosystems said they would work together to develop a Windows-based laptop PC that will be the cheapest available in any market worldwide.
The system, called the MiLeap H Series, will run Windows XP Home and will sell for 17,000 Indian Rupees, or about $425 U.S. dollars. The MiLeap H features a 30 GB hard drive and is “broadband ready,” the companies said in a statement Friday.

The third and final service pack for Windows XP is not even out, and Microsoft is already hammering away at it plugging security soles. Although it debuted in full development alongside Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP Service Pack 3 is yet to be finalized with the delivery planned by mid-2008. Since the end of March 2008, Microsoft managed to sweep XP SP3 under the rug, but until the past month, the service pack was very much still a work in progress.

Microsoft chose the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show 2008 in Las Vegas to announce new customers for its Silverlight rich-media player and introduce software aimed at broadcasters.
It also detailed SilverlightDRM, a content protection system based on Microsoft’s PlayReady technology, which is set to be available later this year with Silverlight 2.

Jason Perlow has come up with a suggestion for Microhoo–a Windows Mobile-based “Y!Phone” mated with a Wi-Fi-enabled Zune and some combination of Yahoo and MSN online services. Of course, it would also include a camera, a 3G wireless service and, as a differentiator from the iPhone, an integrated slide-out keyboard and support for Microsoft applications.

As Yahoo gears up to report its first quarter performance next week, one analyst predicts the Internet search pioneer may clock in at the lower end of its revenue range, while other analysts predict a buyout deal with Microsoft may be in the mix this week.
UBS Securities analysts predict the Internet search pioneer will likely saddle up with Microsoft in a buyout deal valued in the range between $32 to $35 a share.
