Hi

Well there are several tools to do back up and recovery.

Alternatively you can use your xp cd and to boot from it and to choose repair option.

Is this your question.

Can I install system recovery from the system recovery CD. See, long story. The wife volunteered me to fix her coworkers desktop. I can generally fix most problems (hardware and software). When I received the PC I could not even boot into safe mode with out getting the blue screen that tells you the PC needs to shut down before damage is done. Not the same BSOD I'm use to seeing. The owner of the PC does not know or cant locate original system recovery Cd's. I had to order from Dell and download drivers. I have the computer up and running now with all updates. I need to know how to put the system recovery software on the hard drive so I can do a system recovery from that in case the owner looses disc's again.

Hi

1.Insert the Windows XP Home Edition CD into the CD or DVD drive and perform additional tasks.
2.Click Browse this CD.
3.Click Value Add.
4.Click MSFT.
5.Click NTBackup.
6.Click NT Back installer.
7.Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation of the backup utility.

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu, nor is Backup listed in Add or Remove Programs.

Automated System Recovery is not a supported feature in Windows XP Home Edition using Backup, but Backup is provided on the CD-ROM as additional value to help back up critical system data. For additional information, refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article.

If you want that Windows do not asks original cd then follow this below steps.

1. Insert Windows XP installation disc to computer. Let’s assume that the CD drive is D: drive.

2. Copy the i386 folder from D:\ drive to C:\ drive. Now the C: drive should have an i386 folder too which looks like C:\i386\

3. Go to Start > Run, type regedit and click OK.

4. Navigate to the path below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

5. At the right pane, there should be a name called SourcePath with the Data value as D:\. Double click on the SourcePath and change the value data to C:\i386\

This way you can run system file checker (SFC) without inserting xp cd!

Ah I see!! I have an XP-Pro desktop [with System Recovery "built-in"], I thought system recovery was a feature of all XP editions! - [I've not owned an XP-Home PC, so I wasn't aware it didn't have Sys. Recovery option!]

That surprises me too. Why would MS only implement system recovery into certain versions of XP??? Strange.........

I found out that Dell as many other PC manufacturers did not have the content of the OS, drivers, utilities and tools saved on a hidden partition of the hard drive until a later date. In this case, my case, the two PC's in question don't have this option. Dell started shipping PC's with the hidden partition option in November 17, 2004. The two PC's in question where shipped on 9/02/2004 and 9/014/2004. Which sucks for me and everybody else out there who have PC's with out this option. With out the original system recovery disc's, ones only option is to order the OS and download drivers from PC manufacturer. This does not include any of the preloaded software that came with the system which means your forced to purchase all the software at retail prices if you want it back.
