How good is Avast really? We dropped McAfee at work as we continually got infected even though McAfee updated daily. We acquired NOD32, and haven't had any probs at all since.

Spazzy - Avast is the best freebie AV in my opinion. I've used the other top-rated freebies too, like Avira and AVG 8.0 ..... Avast would be my first choice out of the three! I still use it and have never had a problem with it ..... it doesn't slow my system down at all and it "visibly" updates itself daily. :)

Not used it myself, i use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
Here are a few reviews for you to look at and decide for yourself. Seems pretty conclusive to me, i might give it a try and stop Kaspersky's annual subscription! :)

rsvr85 - I just looked at that reviewcentre link you posted, the statistics are pretty conclusive .... Avast does "EXACTLY what it says on the tin"! - I have tried AVG 8.0 in the past and the updater had problems connecting to the server [a common occurence apparently, according to other user reviews I have read] - Avast updates itself almost every day and alerts you to this fact with a small [inobtrusive!] pop-up window ..... no manual updating is required with Avast [for the program or the updates, once it's configured]. - No adware either, just a good quality product! 8-)

rsvr85 - I've been using it fo 18 months! I have it on both my PCs. - But if I were to ever PAY for AV [heaven forbid!] ..... I'd go for Kaspersky I reckon.

Avast is good. I've used it on one of my machines for some time now. AVG is good also and I like Avira as well.

Rather than skirt between numerous free trials of high-end antivirus programs i held my breath and plumped for Avast! (free edition)
Needless to say i havent looked back. There is nothing more satisfying than the reassuring tones of your antivirus telling you that it has updated the virus database
Every little program is a cog that makes my machine - simply awesome! :D

I'm using Avira Antivir and i find it very useful and light.
On my old pc xp-based, i've used Nod32, another AV that i find really good.
Only little problem that i've found in Avira is that, when it starts to think that something is a trojan or someother problem, is really difficult to convince him.
