In windows vista premium i have an intermittent problem and im hoping i can find an answer on here, quite often i get the permission denied message when trying to delete or rename files, these files are mainly mp3 and video footage
right click, rename file i get,"you need to confirm this operation",then"you need permission to perform this action"
right click delete file "are you sure you want to delete this file","you need to confirm this operation", "you need permission to perform this action"
So far ive tried the program "take ownership" and "Norton UAC" neither solved my problem
The only answer seems to be turn the uac off
Any help much appreciated

Just download Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/#download
Install it,
Right click the permission denied file and choose Unlock from the drop-down menu
then choose "release all" and then you can delete or rename as much as you'd like
Have fun

I have seen this happening on Vista. The idea is - when an important activity is being performed, OS will ask permission from "console". This helps prevent unauthorized activity from "desktop"s (or remote desktops). If the desktop and console happen to be the same, the initiator of that activity himself/herself will see the confirmation message, which may seem inane.
I use biterscripting ( http://www.biterscripting.com ) for copying/renaming files etc. And, I am not seeing this behavior with it. Based on my experience, biterscripting observes the OS's security rules. So, I need to see your exact system/user setup before I can definitively say whether biterscripting will be any different.

- OS Version, and any service packs.
- The permissions required for the file being deleted/renamed.
- The permissions assigned to you (the user trying to delete/rename).
- Are there any other users on the computer at the time (such as with Login-As, or Switch-User) ?
I understand this is a lot of info. But being a system admin, I know that, sometimes, it is difficult to debug a problem, without actually being "on" the computer. In lieu of that, a lot of info is the only way to go. You can also try to delete/rename by making sure that there is only one active desktop on the computer, there is only one user (you) on the computer, and that user has administrative permissions. You can also try biterscripting.
