coolestjar - I use CCleaner all the time and on occasions I use Wise Registry Cleaner too. Both are safe to use and I've never had problems with either. http://www.ccleaner.com/ and http://www.wisecleaner.com/ .... I use two because one finds stuff the other doesn't always find!

Definitely CCleaner. TuneUp Utilities 2009 is also worth a mention

Here's an interesting take on 'Registry Cleaning' (and other tid-bits) I found over at Lifehacker (see the forth item in the article).

Food for thought !

jpbrogan - I just read that lifehacker article and it mentions the word "gimmicks" to sell registry cleaners...... but if a person uses reputable free cleaners then "gimmicks" doesn't apply, as they are not trying to "sell" us anything. There are quite a few free good ones that are safe to use and "do the job", such as CCleaner [from Piriform], nCleaner [from NKProds], Glary Utilities, Wise Cleaner, Advanced SystemCare [from Iobit]. These free ones are well established and probably do a better job than some of the paid ones out there!

rsvr85 & randomchaos,
Do either of you have any recommendations as to what should be cleaned (what should be checked on the list)? Also, should I be inspecting what CCleaner is repairing or cleaning or just assume what it does is okay?

jcterry - I personally, just use the default settings in CCleaner, I have used CCleaner every day for the past 3 years and I've not had any problem whatsoever.

I second randomchaos' opinion. However, i did have an issue with it;
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=873
I became a bit blasé with it, and when i did, BOOM, it screwed me!!
Overtime, you'll become familiar with it's results and a very brief check will tell you if what it's doing is OK or not.
Always check what's it going to remove and always backup the registry when prompted to.

randomchaos .. I think you missed the point of the article. The author actually recommends, in the second paragraph, the careful use (see rsvr85's post above) of CCleaner as a troubleshooting tool. The 'gimmicks' referred to are the marketing hype of commercial cleaners touted as performance tools. IMHO, defragging the registry will give you a bigger performance 'bang for the buck' than a cleaning. As stated in the article, cleaning out a few hundred entries out of thousands is not going to help performance but may help with troubleshooting a problem, which is the point the author was making, not saying all cleaners are 'gimmicks'.
